New York Fashion Week 2012

September 12, 2012

This year over 200,000 people gathered in “The Big Apple” for New York Fashion Week, all of whom appreciate every drape, sequin, and applique that sauntered down the runway. This inspiring occasion is part of a global event, with similar runway shows happening in London, Paris and Milan. The talent that will be in New York until September 13 is staggering. Legends in the fashion world such as Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Diane Von Furstenberg, Versace, et cetera wowed audiences with Fall, Spring, and Resort collections.

This fall’s trends, marked in several designers’ Ready To Wear Collections (RTW), boasted a number of looks that translate easily from the runway to the street. For shoes, suede booties and pumps, buckle boots and over-the-knee boots are must-haves. Garment trends include chunky crewneck sweaters, robe-inspired trench coats, lingerie-inspired fashions, neon accents and leather shorts.

While some of these may seem a little dramatic for everyday wear, choosing one statement piece at a time is a fabulous way to look fashion-forward without being theatrical. Try wearing one neon piece with an otherwise neutral outfit. Or, take a sexier lingerie-inspired top and layer it underneath something more conservative for just a peep of lace. Each of these fall trends is bold enough to elevate any outfit with little effort.

For the designers who chose to show their Spring RTW collections, the most apparent themes were lace, shades of gray, and floral. Uninspired as these motifs may sound, there was not a single look on Fashion Week’s runways that looked dated or monotonous. Rather, the whimsical and clean lines of the looks were a refreshing departure from the often matronly vibes that lace, gray, and floral patterns can exude.

The balance between edgy and incredibly feminine is the most perfect part about the runway looks above.

Above are some of our favorite looks from this year’s New York Fashion Week. Helmut Lang keeps true to his understated and modern style with this chic and comfortable look (1). Jason Wu makes suspenders an irresistible accessory for every fashionista (2). BCBG accentuates its floral patterns with bold accents and borders in this statement piece (3). Marchesa never fails to craft some of the most intricate, divine, blissfully ethereal looks in the fashion world. This gown is no exception to those standards (4). Zac Posen’s entire collection was worthy of this “favorites” collage: incredible architecture coupled with the softest tulles and ruffles make for unforgettable masterpieces (5).
